Admittedly, I don’t know a great deal about A/V codecs. There’s so many around these days, that its hard to keep track of them. I just want something that plays my video files, dammit! That said, I have heard of H.264, whether through making use of the codec in playback, or through the web over the years, I’m unsure.
There’s one thing I am sure of though; if I know about it, its one of the bigger ones. Oh, and Google’s dropping it from future releases of Chrome in favour of their own WebM format. Why? Well, some are saying that Big G don’t want to be paying royalties for the propriety H.264 codec, but my money is on this being another of their “Anything you can do, I can do better” projects, and we know those can be very hit and miss.
